What relationships exists among music, mathematics and the divine? Find out at this afternoon of world music with Purna Lokha Quartet, a musical collaboration that illuminates the underlying mathematical patterns of the universe with a joyful exploration of Indian raga and Western jazz and blues. The quartet bridges these two musical cultures through improvisation. Purna Lokha Quartet features Grammy Award-winning violinist David Balakrishnan (Turtle Island String Quartet), violinist and mathematician Purnaprajna Bangere, Amit Kavthekar on tabla, and bassist Jeff Harshbarger.

A mathematician, like a painter or a poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made of ideas. His patterns, like the painter’s or the poet’s must be beautiful; the ideas, like the colors or the words, must fit together in a harmonious way.
– Mathematician G. H. Hardy (1877-1947)

Presented in partnership with the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), one of the world’s preeminent centers for collaborative research in mathematics, and with the generous support of Gita and Ashok Vaish.
