Lunar New Year starts on February 12, 2021 and we are ready to celebrate the Year of the Ox.
The Lunar New Year is not only observed in the Chinese community but is also celebrated across several Asian Pacific communities. To help you and your family celebrate safely at home as well as around San Francisco, please see the Celebration Guide below compiled by the APA Heritage Foundation.
Feb 12: APA Heritage Foundation hosts a virtual Lunar New Year Celebration with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
Feb 18: Bridging Communities Through Art & Culture, a citywide Stand Together SF virtual event celebrating Black History Month and Lunar New Year with a panel conversation on cross-cultural engagement and spirited cultural performances!
For the celebration of the Year of the Ox, the San Francisco Chinese Chamber of commerce has organized an exhibit of 11 oxen. Displayed in various San Francisco neighborhoods from February 3 to March 14, 2021, each Ox is culturally decorated by local artists. Take a selfie with an Ox display and tag the Chinese Chamber @chineseparade with hashtag #oxonparade for a chance to win a prize.
After the event, each Ox will be donated to a local nonprofit to be auctioned off. Proceeds to benefit the nonprofit.
SF Chinatown Merchants Association (SFCMA) invites you to visit 12 Chinese New Year murals – each featuring a different Chinese Zodiac animal and predictions for the new year. While exploring the shops, restaurants, vibrant streets and alleyways in Chinatown, take a photo with each mural & enter the cash raffle sponsored by the APA Heritage Foundation. To enter, post your photos on Instagram and tag @SFCMA. Your submission can not contain photos from other people. One entry per person.
The Asian Art Museum invites you to celebrate the Lunar New Year at home. From performance videos and exhibits to art making activities, there is something for the entire family to enjoy. Visit the Asian Art Museum website at www.asianart.org.
